Cognitive Psychology And The Management And Treatment Of...

In this essay I will be looking in detail at two psychological perspectives, comparing their difference and similarities and how they would be applied to the management and treatment of mental illness. Also I will explain the theories of two psychologist highlighting their strengths and weaknesses and there similarities and differences. AC1.1, AC3.1 Biological psychology looks at the biological aspects of behaviour. It looks at how the brain s structure, chemistry, activity and genetic make-up etc. relates to behaviour. Cognitive psychology focuses on the way the brain processes information, how people perceive, understand, make decisions about and remember information. Heredity is an important part in the development of a species, and that offspring tend to be like their parents, so they will inherit their behaviours. Evolutionary psychology is built on the assumption that the process of evolution has served to shape our minds and behaviour as well as our bodies. Due to this most of people’s behaviour is adaptive which means people can adapt to different environments they may find the mselves in. Many bio-psychologists have concentrated on abnormal behaviour and have tried to explain it in physiological terms, for example they believe that schizophrenia is affected by levels of dopamine (a neurotransmitter). Evolutionary psychology approach is thought provoking, however it is said to also be controversial, because it focuses to much on the biological aspect of behaviour, not taking in to consideration the importance of social and cultural factors. Cognitive psychology approach focuses on a person’s internal mental processes for example perception, attention and memory, and how theses mental processes influence a person’s behaviour. Humans differ from many other species but most importantly in terms of their cognitive abilities such as thinking, reasoning and problem solving.
